It's Always Nice To Meet New Racers And See New Faces

Friday Night Dirt Drag at Melson's

Melson's is always happy to have new drivers bring their trucks to the events. In fact, the more the merrier.

This weeks new driver was Nick with his Dodge Cummins diesel.

Keep in mind that alot of the trucks that visit Melson's are built for mud tracks but not all. Nick's Dodge really ran good for its first-ever dirt drag.

He should really give himself a pat on the back.

Take a look at these videos.........

I'd say that's not bad at all for the first time.

Hope you enjoyed yourself, Nick, and hope you will be back again.

Don't forget: If you have a truck, jeep or anything (just about) that will roll bring it to Melson's and try it out on the sand drag. See website for rules www.melsontractorpull.webs.com

Dirt Drag At Melson's Friday Night

Action At Melson's

These two drivers are quite competative when it comes to mud racing and get the chance to run side by side in the 200 ft. dirt drag Friday night.

Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Despite the struggling economy, officials with the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon say contributions and pledges from this year's Labor Day event totaled $58.9 million.

The amount was down from nearly $60.5 million last year and a record $65 million in 2008. But Lewis says he's heartened by Americans' ability to help others in need even when they're struggling financially.

Lewis, national chairman of the Tucson-based Muscular Dystrophy Association, praised the progress the organization is making for people living with muscle diseases.

The 45th annual telethon originated for the fifth consecutive year from the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas and reached some 40 million viewers through 170 television stations.

Dozens of performers joined the 21-hour event, including Barry Manilow, Michael Feinstein, Carrot Top and Norm Crosby.

Some People Think Mud Bogging Is A Good Place For Politics

Some of you may not know this but there have been a few people that have worked quite hard behind the scenes for quite a few months to arrange the events at the Gumboro Mudbog. In fact, those people work behind the scenes for the wounded soldiers more times than anyone knows.
Last week I had a few conversations with a couple of them about the event because I wanted to know more so that I could write about in more depth on this blog. These men are no slackers when it comes to caring about these men and women of the military and I wish more people (including myself when it comes to giving) could and would do more.

Saturday was designated to be a day for the wounded warriors. They were coming to Gumboro to watch the mud races and to enjoy themselves on Delmarva and so the people could say thank you for all they have done and for all of the sacrifices they have given to this country.

Mr. Butch Elzey, and and some others deserve a pat on the back for all of the hard work put forth for Saturday's events. However, I was told in my conversation that POLITICS will play NO part in the events. I agreed with that decision 100%.
But it seems that one person either didn't get the memo, or has no respect for the military, or just lacks common sense and compassion.

It has been reported that this person was PLACING CAMPAIGN STICKERS ON WOUNDED WARRIORS CHILDREN AT THE MUD BOG ON SATURDAY!!
Tell me Ms. Rollins, have you ever bothered to visit the Gumboro Mud Bog at any other time before this past Saturday? Have you ever been there before to just see what these dedicated people have done for YOUR state of DELAWARE?

I can't say a word about anyone running for any office in the state of Delaware.... I am not a resident of that state. But Ms. Rollins, I AM A RESIDENT OF THIS GREAT AND WONDERFUL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!

And that makes me able to tell you that what you did Saturday was inexcusable and low and in poor taste!!

One Soldier Gets A Taste Of Mud Bogging!!

I will get no argument from anyone at Gumboro Mudbog yesterday when I say it was a wonderful Delmarvalous day!

With so much activity towards the ending of racing competition yesterday hardly no one noticed this soldier being pushed in his wheel chair onto the racing arena.

I hope in some small way it says "thanks for all you have done for all of us".

Precious cargo aboard this truck! I'm not just talking about the driver I'm talking about the fearless warrior riding on the passenger side.
Watch this video................
(Length of pit is 200 feet).

(I can't help but wonder what his thoughts were as that truck pushed mud onto the windshield.)

The crowd went WILD and by the time they reached the spectators everyone was on their feet cheering! God Bless and protect all the soldiers in the military.......far away or near. God bless and protect their families.

It is because of your sacrifices that we are given the opportunity to go about each day freely
and enjoy our lives without fear.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!

~~Poker Run For A Very Worthy Cause~~

Please mark this date on your calendars and if you do have a motorcycle please plan to attend. This is an important matter and needs everyone's attention.

Pass the word along to all of your friends or anyone that might want to ride for this wonder cause.

There aren't many people around this area that don't already know Courtney and her wonderful family. Many of us have ventured with Courtney and her family through the past months, day to day, beside them, as Courtney still remains in somewhat of a coma and continues to heal from injuries resulting from an auto accident this past May.

She was to graduate with her class at Arcadia High School this past June.

Courtney, along with her mother, (whom has never left her side) are currently in a hospital in Richmond, Virginia but will be preparing to move to another hospital in the next few days.

As we all know medical care can become costly. Expenses for the mother to remain by her daughters side can become expensive also. And this is where all of you can help!

Even if you don't have a motocycle to ride on August 28th or you can't make it in time for the ride try to make time to stop by Cycle Creations to leave even a small donation. Even the smallest monetary gift will be greatly appreciated by this family, and even Courtney's friends.

If you have no money to spare please take time to say a prayer for Courtney that she may be back to her old self again and continue on with her life. Please pray for this young woman and her family daily. Prayers don't cost a thing.

Enjoy the pig roast!! It's the best!
Take some pictures and send them to me. I will be sure to post them!

The Newest NASCAR Sponsor ~~ The GI Bill

In an effort to bring more attention to veterans education benefits, the GI Bill will sponsor a car in a Sept. 11 NASCAR race in Richmond, Va., and is also one of the sponsors of the race itself.

The Air National Guard is the chief sponsor of that Sprint Cup Series 400 race, which will be called the Air Guard 400.

The idea, according to Veterans Affairs Department officials, is to get the GI Bill plastered on a racecar and frequently mentioned by broadcasters to spread the word about the availability of the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Sponsoring the race and a car in the race is part of an outreach program aimed at getting more people to use the year-old GI Bill benefits program.

The combined cost of sponsoring a car and the race will be about $420,000, a significant part of a $1 million advertising campaign that also includes buying ads in college newspapers and in online publications to try to reach eligible service members and veterans, VA officials said.

Having a racecar painted with the GI Bill as its sole sponsor, having the pit crew dressed to match the car and doing some pre-race promotions will cost about $200,000, VA officials said. Serving as an official race sponsor will cost another $250,000. Sponsorship will result in frequent mentions of the GI Bill and its purpose during the nighttime race on the oval track, officials said.

NASCAR is a good way to reach service members and veterans, VA officials said, because marketing surveys show that one-third of NASCAR fans are veterans or personally know a veteran. The Defense Department also advertises at NASCAR events because of marketing surveys that show race fans have a greater interest in military service than people who don’t watch NASCAR events.

An added benefit of being a race sponsor is that NASCAR events are broadcast on military radio and television networks, VA officials said.

“We wanted to do more than just reach veterans and influencers that are thinking about school … we wanted to also reach those folks who could be going to school but may not be fully aware of the benefit,” VA spokesman Nathan Naylor said.

Baltimore Grand Prix Scheduled For Labor Day Weekend 2011

The first Baltimore Grand Prix will be run over Labor Day next year instead of Aug. 5-7, the city and Baltimore Racing Development announced today.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and BRD announced the move today, and also said they will make a series of improvements to the track layout to allow for more fan attractions.

"We are very excited to be able to schedule the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix for the weekend that we originally wanted," Jay Davidson, president of the Baltimore Grand Prix and Baltimore Racing Development, said in a release today. "We have always planned to market the Baltimore Grand Prix as a destination event, and we are expecting race fans from throughout the region and around the world to travel to the race. Having the Grand Prix on Labor Day weekend makes it even easier for fans to make travel plans to attend this action-packed 'three day festival of speed' in downtown Baltimore."

The firm said it worked closely with the city and the IZOD IndyCar Series in order to make the Labor Day weekend dates possible. "I'm very pleased that BRD and IndyCar are now able to accommodate the city's preferred date for the Baltimore Grand Prix," Rawlings-Blake said in a release. "Labor Day Weekend will provide another full day for racing fans to enjoy all that Baltimore has to offer and with any luck, slightly cooler temperatures."

The new design of the course includes moving a pit lane from Russell Street on the west side of Oriole Park to the east side of the complex in the shadows of the historic B&O Warehouse.

With the new pit location, the race track will now circle Oriole Park and open up fan opportunities. Two new turns have been added on Conway Street to slow the cars as they approach pit lane. The new layout also features reconfigured turns 10 and 11, as the previous tight turns become fast, sweeping "S" turns back onto Pratt Street. The first four turns remain unchanged.

85th Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim - July 28, 2010

The 85th Annual Chincoteague Pony Penning is set to take place tomorrow, Wednesday, July 28th. The Ponies will hit the water after 10:00 AM at dead low tide.

This year, the town is providing a free shuttle service for people wishing to attend the swim. The departures will being at 5:00 AM at Chincoteague High School on July 28th. There are various shuttle stops for all who are staying on the island already in hotels and campgrounds. The shuttles will be wheelchair accessible and will run continuously until the pony swim ends.

According to lore, the Assateague Ponies swam to shore when the Spanish Galleon carrying them was shipwrecked. However, after research was completed it is more likely they were simply turned free by settlers. The Penning was originally for livestock owners to claim, brand, break and harness their loose herds. By the 1700's it had become an annual event, complete with festivities for entire community, according to the Chincoteague Pony Penning Website. The first known documentation of the Pony Penning was a pamphlet printed in 1835.

Following the swim will be the Pony Auction. The auctioneer for the even will be Tim Jennings. At last year's Pony Auction, 65 horses were sold, or folds as they are referred, raising $94,100 for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. 5 ponies were "bought back" in last year's auction. "Buy backs" are ponies which are purchased at auction and then returned to the heard on Assateague Island. Several "buy back" groups exist such as Feathered Friends and the Buy Back Babes. Traditionally, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman's Carnival has ended the Saturday after the Pony Swim. However, this year Chincoteague's Carnival will run until Saturday, August 7th.
