Gumboro Mud Bog ~ May 5, 2012 ~ First Event of Season

Opening day of the Gumboro/Crisfield Mud Bog Season

A few things were a little different for the first mud bog race of the season.  Barry Long, driver of "Sod Buster"  was sidelined due to a  knee injury.  This left only one other person to drive that mud truck..his son and  my "go to guy" Patrick Long,  who has always driven his very own truck "All Night Soldier".

Patrick drove the "Sod Buster" in two classes on Saturday:
Mini Open/ 4.27 seconds  and Unlimited Class/ 4.38 seconds

(Viedeo: Not sure which class this is)

Mudbog Trophies and Awards

2011 Gumboro Crisfield Mudbog Banquet
Saturday  March 31, 2012
Crisfield Elks Lodge
Crisfield, Maryland

What a delicious meal the  ladies of the Crisfield Elks Lodge  prepared for the mudbog drivers and guests!  If you left the banquet that night hungry it was your own fault!  In my opinion it was by far the best meal we have experienced since the banquets began.  Thank you Crisfield Elks Lodge!

Most of us felt just a little out of place.  It seemed strange to be in Crisfield at night instead of the morning hours.  There were no mud trucks brought along, no mud...NO racing.  And the only washing done that night was  washing the dishes and the drivers weren't asked to do that.  Seemed a little odd for all of us to be together and not be in the hot sun getting ready for a  day of racing.  Great to see everyone and congradulations to all of you that won trophies and/or awards.

"Superheroes" Truck Gets A Mud Bath

The "Superheroes"  mudtruck is popular with many mudbog fans not only for the speed it travels through the mud but for the super heroes it has painted on  its body.
The colors are bright and the superheroes are not quite  life size but large enough to be recognized.

Cleaned and mud free this is one eye-catching truck and once you see it you never forget it.

This isn't the best photo of the truck but you can at least see the colors used to make it so appealing.

Here's what the "Superheroes" truck experiences --

And the crowd loves it!!

Johnnie Edwards Mixes It Up With "In The Mix"

First run of the 2011 mudbogging season.

Some of you may not know but the driver of "In The Mix" is no stranger to driving this jeep through any kind of mud.  Johnnie drove this same jeep years ago in Crisfield during the mud hop days.

With a new engine this year and new tires Johnnie and his jeep set out for their first run.  These guys that support this sport have a true love for mud.  That's just  my opinion, however.  Making mudpies is more my speed.

Mud conditions don't matter to this racer and his jeep.  And this isn't a complete pass.  But it is a taste of what will happen when he does.......and I'll probably mess my pants!

The Craziest Things Go Through The Mud

I've seen some of the craziest vehicles  driven through the knee deep thick gooey mud at Gumboro.  And some of those vehicles are actually the transportation to get to Gumboro.  But I've never seen one  of these.

David Elliott of Virginia brought his ARGO to Gumboro on Saturday to test in the  mud.   There is a  2 cylinder Briggs and Stratton motor in this little thing and it  will get you anywhere you want to go.

Even through deep think mud.  Watch this!

NEW Attraction At Gumboro Mudbog

There was a shortage of spectators yesterday for the opening of the Gumboro 2011 Mudbog Season but not a shortage on vehicles for the mud competition.

The sponsors of the Gumboro Mudbog have  added  something new this year.  It's a lifted short bus  riding on oversized tires.  This was a tremendous hit!  For $5.00 you can ride the bus on a new muddy track that is situated just as you enter the mudbog grounds.

During intermission yesterday the bus made it's way though the 200 foot muddy pit  some drivers struggle to get through!  No problem with those tires!

187 East Performance - Bowden Racing Team Ready For Racing

Winter is behind us now and it's time again for mudbog racing!  The  Bowden Racing Team has been working really hard for the past few months to ready for tomorrows opening day of the Gumboro Mudbog.
"The Grey Ghost" owned and driven by Lee and Lori Ann Sturgis have added a roll cage to their mud truck.
Lee Sturgis participated in the first ever mudbog sponsored by Checkered Flags Productions and the Salisbury Civic Center in January.

"All Night Soldier" driven by Patrick Long participated in the mudbog held at the Civic Center in January also.  He has installed a new roll cage.  Roll cages are just one of the requirements to qualify to race in some the various classes of racing at Gumboro.
"Short and Sassy" driven by Barry Wise will be racing with a larger engine this year.  I'll have updated photos on this truck and the new engine a little later.
"In the Mix" with driver Johnnie Edwards will be racing with a new engine also this season.
And not to forget "Sod Buster".  The  old "Sod Buster" is transforming into a new and improved mud truck.  We're all looking forward to it being at the track in time for Crisfield races in May.  Stay tuned..........

Don't forget opening day for Gumboro mudracing is Saturday, April 30.  Gates open at 10:00 A.M.

Lets hope racing begins at the announced 1:00 P.M.
It's been a long winter and the Bowden Racing Team is ready to rip through that mud!

Hope to see you there!

Gumboro Mudbog Annual Banquet

The second Gumboro Mudbog Banquet for drivers and guests was held on Saturday, March 5, 2011. After a nice meal the drivers that finished with points during the 2010 racing seasons were presented trophies. What really made the evening enjoyable was when the emcee managed to find some odd or unusual stories to tell on quite a few of the drivers and presented them with an award and some hilarious gifts! The banquet committee really outdid themselves this year.

Bowden Racing

I am proud to tell you that The 187 East Performance Team took a few trophies and a few awards.

Front Row, left to right: Barry Long-driver of "Sod Buster" - "Smoker Award"

Lori Ann Long-Sturgis - driver of "Grey Ghost" - "Flat Tire Award"

Lee Sturgis - driver of "Grey Ghost"

Back Row,
Patrick Long - driver of "All Night Soldier" - 1st place Small Tire Prostock and 2nd place Big Tire Prostock

Johnny Edwards - driver of "In The Mix" - 2nd place Mini Open and 3rd place Unlimited

Barry Wise - driver of "Short and Sassy" - 2nd place Small Tire Prostock

Donald Bowden - Mechanic and the guy that keeps these trucks running week after week and year after year! He's the "go to" guy for the team even if a truck has the hiccups and can be seen alot of times in the pits at Gumboro or Crisfield just about spinning in circles! He gets the job done for the guys. In fact on some race days last season he was so busy that the committee this year awarded Donald with the "Pencil Me In" Award! And I'll bet he uses the little notebook this new season, if he hasn't already!

Thanks Donald for a great racing season last year and for being there for all of us!

And many thanks to the Gumboro Mudbog Committee for another wonder banquet to end another wonderful and fun year of mudbog racing.

Gumboro Mudbog opens April 9th for the first race of the season.

Mudbogging Goes Indoors

MudBogging, for the first time, was taken inside the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in January, through the efforts of Checkered Flag Productions.

Some of the regular drivers from the Gumboro Mudbog were on hand to put their trucks through the last tracks of thick mud before settling down and concentrating on the upcoming season of racing which is just now a few weeks away.

Jared Collins (no photo) driving Orange Crush, in the Modified Class, took first place in the Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening shows.

Kelly Hubbard driving High Voltage, in Modified Class, took fourth place Friday night, first place Saturday afternoon and second place Saturday night.
Lee Sturgis who drives Grey Ghost and

Patrick Long the driver of All Night Soldier finished somewhere in the mix of it all but had a great time participating. This put an end to the mudbogging for a few weeks for these guys. The new racing season in Gumboro begins in April and since the first of February the drivers have been busy preparing for the summer of mudbogging.

More stories and photos on mudbogging in our archives........please feel free to browse.

'Bog Hog' Flips At Gumboro

The spectators always love to see Aaron Ellis and the 'Bog Hog'.

Big Tire Modified- Bog Hog time was 4.151 seconds

Last race day of 2010 -- 10.09.10

This roll over, once again, could have turned out to be something horrible.

The people that you see running to the truck after it came to a rest were in the pits. The jumped the chain fence to get to Aaron. It wasn't until AFTER three drivers from the pits had arrived on the scene that only ONE from the Gumboro crew came to his aid! Slowly, yes I mean slowly, they trickled in. What's the problem here? What in the heck were they waiting for?

Again, there was NO ambulance on the site. Suppose this driver had suffered a neck injury? How long would it take to get paramedics to the scene.......after all, it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and I am sure under those conditions it would have taken a while.

This is crucial. This is ridiculous! Will a horrible accident have to occur before those that own the Gumboro Mudbog get the complete picture?

Thank goodness the drivers are agile and quick thinking enough to get there! Boohoo on the comedy caper guys that go only as fast as the vehicles they ride in. Either put bigger motors in their carts or make their behinds run! Don't leave it to the drivers.........USE SOME RESPONSIBILITY!

Gumboro Mudbog October 9, 2010 ~ Last Race Day Of The Season

Johnny Edwards driving 'In The Mix' sped through the 200 feet of mud on Saturday October 9, 2010 in 4.311 seconds!
Good job!

Here's a video of his run that tied him for second place with Ken Daisey, driver of 'Ole Blue'.

'Ole Blue' ~ Driver Ken Daisey

I don't have a video of Ken Daisey and his 4.311 second run but I do have a photo to show just exactly WHERE 'Ole Blue' and his driver ended up..............
They ended up in the bean field!
Now, some say it was the fault of the throttle. Some argue the brakes. Brakes???? I've asked around and I have heard that the breaks on these trucks (for some of the drivers) have been tested ONE time this year during the tech check they go through before each and every race.

And that's fine because if you race knowing you don't have breaks on your truck you classify as an idiot.

At the end of this race the winnings were split between the driver of 'In The Mix' and driver of 'Ole Blue' and both share second place. I wonder HOW this can be so!

Well, I'm calling bullshit on this decision!

Why? Because the driver of 'Ole Blue' (who has only raced ONE time this year) ended totally out of the mudding arena! Johnny Edwards and 'In The Mix' have been at EVERY race this year and sometimes races in two classes. I guess the money Edwards spends, or any driver in any class, on any race day to keep Gumboro in the mudbog business, isn't appreciated. The Edwards family spends alot of time and money and have every racing season.

Now back to 'Ole Blue'.......
The driver of 'Ole Blue' never stopped his truck.......consequently ending in the bean field. He never applied the brakes. Did he even have brakes??

AND WHAT ABOUT THIS: Vehicles must have a KILL Switch (shutting off power to electric pumps and ignition systems) within easy reach of driver. Master Disconnect Switch to be located at the rear of the vehicle and clearly labeled. EXCEPT STREET AND PROSTOCK CLASSES.

Had Mr. Daisey hit that kill switch and applied breaks that truck could have and would have stopped within the arena.

OR WHAT ABOUT: Driver MUST maintain PROPER control of vehicle at ALL times!

And there is nothing mentioned under the Rules and Regulations concerning proper control!!

This should have been a total disqualification NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

But it's typical decision making for those with the last call on matters at Gumboro. It seems another driver had the misfortune of sharing his 1st place status with another driver during another racing season.

I remember very well an issue of a driver finding out AFTER the race that he shared the 1st place status with another driver. Now keep in mind that this driver left and collected the FULL winnings. It was AFTER the races that a recording was timed and the other truck was declared the winner also!

So, not only did Gumboro "decision makers" award another 1st place status they paid the full amount to the other driver as well!

Both of these drivers that ended up with winnings were/are personal friends of the Gumboro "final decision makers". And that makes it bullshit!
