State Of Virginia Put On Drought Watch

A drought watch has been issued for Virginia as a long hot, dry spell has stunted crops, heightened the threat of wildfires and drawn down reservoirs.

The watch issued Wednesday by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is intended to increase awareness of a possible drought as the state heads into the statistically driest months of the year.

The department is urging voluntary measures statewide to protect water supplies.

Recent rains have done little to ease parched conditions. Among the primary factors leading to the watch:

Eight-six percent of the state is experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions, as defined by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Most of Virginia has recorded below-normal precipitation in the last 60 days; short-term forecasts do not indicate a change in that pattern.

Stream monitoring stations show water flows below normal ranges, particularly in southeast and central Virginia.

Wildfire conditions are at levels normally seen much later in the summer months. Twenty localities already have issued burning bans.

Large reservoirs such as Lake Moomaw, Smith Mountain Lake, Kerr Reservoir and Philpott Reservoir have been slowly declining since June.

Virginia growers have been especially hard hit by the scorching temperatures and dry conditions. The state commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services said the early arrival of hot, dry conditions has been difficult to overcome.

"Normally, if you have a late drought, your crops are a little better along," Matthew J. Lohr said. "It's been weeks since we've had measurable rain."

Kevin Engel farms leased land in 14 Virginia counties. He grows corn for feed and store shelves, barley, wheat and soybeans. He said conditions throughout all his fields are uniformly bad.

"A very large majority of corn in our area will not yield anything, even if it rains now," he said. He had to replant 200 acres of soybeans burned by the sun, even though the field was irrigated.

"There's going to be quite a serious blow to Virginia's No. 1 industry this year," Engel said.

Growers who usually can depend on two hay cuts a season are looking at one now, meaning they may have to thin herds if they can't store enough for the winter months.

Even poultry farmers have reported heat stress among their birds.

Lohr said Virginia needs a steady drenching of rain to salvage some crops.

While there is no widespread reports of threatened public water supplies, the DEQ is urging localities, public water suppliers and others to enact preservation measures.

Eastern Shore - 4th of July Fireworks Shows

With the 4th of July right around the corner, several towns and groups will be putting on fireworks displays. Recreational Coordinator of Cape Charles Jennifer Lewis says their fireworks will be similar to last year.

The event will be an all-day event on Sunday, July 4 with vendors. Cape Charles will also have a 4th of July parade.

The show will be best viewed from the beachfront in Cape Charles. The Town of Cape Charles spent about $4,500 on their fireworks display.

The Moose in Exmore will have their 4th of July activities on Saturday July 3rd. Angie Ewell of the Moose says there will be childrens games starting at 3:00 PM, food will be sold. The Moose pool will be open to the public as well, normally the pool is only available to members of the Moose. At 6:00 PM, live music will be played and the fireworks will begin shortly after 9:00 PM.
The town of Chincoteague will be having a fireworks display again. Brian Rush, who is coordinating the event says the fireworks will be on Saturday, July 3rd and are scheduled to start at 10:00 PM and will be shot next to the carnival ground as usual. The rain date will be Monday, July 5th at the same time.

Rush says the Town is hoping to alleviate the traffic gridlock they normally experience on the July 4th firework night by providing free shuttle service to all who want to attend the carnival. The Pony Express will be free of charge on the 3rd and people coming to the island are asked to park at the Chincoteague High School where buses will take them to the carnival grounds.

Chincoteague's fireworks show this year will be run entirely by computer.

Many people boating on the bayside will be able to view the town of Crisfield's fireworks. Val Howard says Crisfield will be having a "Freedom Fest" on Sunday, July 4th shortly before their fireworks are set to go off from 6:00 PM 9:00 PM. New Chincoteague Bridge Grand Opening

The Grand Opening Ceremony of the new Chincoteague Bridge on September 25 could become an annual event drawing people from all ends of the country. Currently, talks surrounding the event are focusing on creating an annual Chincoteague Marathon to honor the bridge.

Joe Lowry, a consultant of VDOT, said there are currently 3 different plans being discussed, but the one being seriously considered is the marathon. The marathon would be a half marathon, or roughly 13.1 miles, and would be sanctioned by the National Track Association. Lowry predicted the marathon could become a large off-season event which would held businesses on the Eastern Shore after the summer tourism season ends.

Along with the marathon there would be a health and fitness expo where residents and runners could learn how more about staying healthy. Vendors would take part in the event.

Lowry predicted an event such as this would draw up to 1,000 runners. The entry fee would be between $25 and $35 per runner. To set up the marathon and hire medical personel would cost approximately $10,300.
