Race Day ~ Crisfield Mud Bog ~ September 1, 2012

If you are familiar with Labor Day tradition in Crisfield then you know nothing gets started until after the famous and fun Crab Derby Parade- not even mud bogging.  The races started just a few minutes late but not enough for anyone to notice unless you were paying attention to the clock.

It is estimated that  Crisfield  mud bog drew at least 1,000 spectators.  And at one point the cars were lined along the shoulder of the road waiting to pay admission into the mud bog. That's not bad at all considering the holiday and all the events happening in town.  These fans are very dedicated mud bog fans!  Much appreciation needs to be given to them for attending race after race and especially for coping with the HOT temperatures on this day.  In fact, I believe, it was hotter than HOT.

The most welcomed person of the day had to be the young man walking around the grounds selling lemonade.  Hope you bought some of it because it was delicious and just hit the spot on such a hot and humid racing afternoon!  The poor guy walked all day offering his wares and when I met up with him later in the day he looked pooped!  I certainly hope someone gave him a nice dinner and he got some much needed rest.

As of this post the race results and points have not been posted on the official Crisfield/Gumboro website.  So until I have that information here are a couple of videos and some photos from the mud bug along with what  information I have.  If you have any info you would like to share email me.  My email address is listed on this blog.

Mudbog Trophies and Awards

2011 Gumboro Crisfield Mudbog Banquet
Saturday  March 31, 2012
Crisfield Elks Lodge
Crisfield, Maryland

What a delicious meal the  ladies of the Crisfield Elks Lodge  prepared for the mudbog drivers and guests!  If you left the banquet that night hungry it was your own fault!  In my opinion it was by far the best meal we have experienced since the banquets began.  Thank you Crisfield Elks Lodge!

Most of us felt just a little out of place.  It seemed strange to be in Crisfield at night instead of the morning hours.  There were no mud trucks brought along, no mud...NO racing.  And the only washing done that night was  washing the dishes and the drivers weren't asked to do that.  Seemed a little odd for all of us to be together and not be in the hot sun getting ready for a  day of racing.  Great to see everyone and congradulations to all of you that won trophies and/or awards.

Mud Bog Team Participates In "Touch A Truck" in Parksley

What a great time the 187 East Performance mud trucks  drivers had on Saturday, November  5, 2011  in Parksley, Virginia.  The "Touch A Truck" event along with all Fall Festival events were canceled from the week before due to the rainfall we experienced that day  - all day long!  Only a few events were salvaged for this day.  It certaily was a shame because Parksley ALWAYS goes all out for this festival.

But the guys with the trucks were satisfied....they were able to please lots of children.

On  this Saturday the skies were clear but it sure was windy! ....Did I mention cool?   The gentlemen in the above photo had the right idea!  Wool uniforms!

All of us had quite a laugh the evening before when my "go to guy" Patrick made the comment that he hoped all of Parksley was awake by the time the mudtrucks rolled into town.  Each truck has an enormous powerful roar of a voice when it runs and I couldn't  help but laugh out loud  that day at the deafening sound these powerful  trucks made as they were unloaded and lined up in the street.

It's a "man thing" to enjoy the huge rumble sound  these trucks make.  I hope that no one was rolled out of bed that day as that rumble sound echoed through the steets.

For those that may not know "Touch A Truck" is an event that allows children the chance to see up close the many types of vehicles they see on a daily basis.  Most of the children who sat in the trucks on Saturday couldn't see over the window in any of the trucks!  They all had a great time.

I can't forget to mention that right in the middle of the "Touch A Truck" was a boat!  This gentleman was quite interesting  to talk to and drew a crowd just as large as the trucks on display.  This racing boat is one of many up and down DelMarVa.  They can be seen racing in Chestertown, Oxford and even Crisfield.  (Just to name a few)

Saturday At Crisfield Mud Bog

Saturday, September 3, 2011- The mudbogging on Saturday concluded the events that were scheduled in Crisfield for the season.  The remaining scheduled mud bog events will be held in Gumboro.

That Saturday wasn't much different from any race day that all of us had attended before.

As usual before any mudding begins each truck is spic and span clean but only because the trucks were washed until every trace of mud was removed.  Unless you have washed one of these muddied truck you have NO clue the time it can take even with power washing.

But that's part of loving to race in the mud.
Lined up before race time: 'All Night Soldier', 'The Grey Ghost', 'In The Mix'

'All Night Soldier' with driver Patrick Long and 'The Grey Ghost' with drivers Lori Ann Sturgis and Lee Sturgis had a great racing day on Saturday.

This is what Patrick Long had to say;
"Had good weekend at Crisfield Mud bog, I took a 3rd, my brother in law took a 3rd driving his truck Grey Ghost and my sister took a 3rd driving Grey Ghost, pretty good for first time out after The Metal Shop put new suspension under the Grey Ghost."

And he's right!  'The Grey Ghost' did have an awesome day for it's first time out.  Personally, the condition of the mud kept alot of trucks slowed even this one.  But I have to give Lori Ann a big pat on the back because she did an awesome job!!  - Sorry guys.

Here are some photos of the brand new suspension under 'The Grey Ghost'.  My question is will they ever begin to squeak?  The truck looks great!  and if you are thinking about a  new suspension for your truck the website address is on the bumper of 'The Grey Ghost'.  - Clever idea.  http://www.themetalshopfab.com/

Lori Ann - only one of two female drivers on Satuday, does a wonderful job traveling through mud!
She's just not afraid of anything when it comes to racing.

Lori Ann

And neither is Lee...............
Lee

Great job Lori Ann, Lee and Patrick!

More photos and video to come...........

"All Night Soldier" Ready For Mud Action

Patrick Long, driver of "All Night Soldier" is certainly no stranger to the sport of mud bogging.  Knowing that he would only be making minor changes in his truck to accomidate his running in another class this season, Patrick participated in the first ever indoor mudbog held at the Salisbury Civic Center this winter.
First run for Patrick in the "All Night Soldier" of the 2011 mudbogging season in  BIG TIRE SUPERSTOCK. "All Night Soldier" place 5th with a full run of 8.617 seconds.

MINI OPEN CLASS
This was only a 60 ft. run (out of 200 ft.) but Patrick and his truck placed second.

Next mudbog races will be held  Sunday, May 29, 2011 behind  the Elks Club  in Crisfield, Maryland.

Mudbogging Goes Indoors

MudBogging, for the first time, was taken inside the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in January, through the efforts of Checkered Flag Productions.

Some of the regular drivers from the Gumboro Mudbog were on hand to put their trucks through the last tracks of thick mud before settling down and concentrating on the upcoming season of racing which is just now a few weeks away.

Jared Collins (no photo) driving Orange Crush, in the Modified Class, took first place in the Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening shows.

Kelly Hubbard driving High Voltage, in Modified Class, took fourth place Friday night, first place Saturday afternoon and second place Saturday night.
Lee Sturgis who drives Grey Ghost and

Patrick Long the driver of All Night Soldier finished somewhere in the mix of it all but had a great time participating. This put an end to the mudbogging for a few weeks for these guys. The new racing season in Gumboro begins in April and since the first of February the drivers have been busy preparing for the summer of mudbogging.
