Accomack County Sheriff's Office Needs Your Help ~ REWARD OFFERED

A recent article in the Daily Times a few days ago mentioned the grafitti that has been showing up recently in lower parts of Accomack County in Virginia.  I mentioned this a few weeks ago in a post with photos to show that this type of vandalism has seem to have taken over.  It is NOT only in the Mears, Savageville, Pungoteague areas.

This type of vandalism is in Horsey, Hallwood, Parksley, Jenkins Bridge...and it just goes on.  Sheriff Todd Godwin has released a statement concerning this and the Accomack Sheriff's Office needs your help.

Below is Sheriff Godwin's statement and photos I took in the upper Accomack County area.....but there are SO many more!

The Sheriff's Department is seeking your help in apprehending those responsible for a rash of graffiti in Accomack County. In some cases homes have been spray painted resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. The graffiti artists seem to be trying to get revenge on a Jay Floyd whom they claim has cooperated with drug enforcement authorities.

There is now a $2000 reward set up for anyone who provides information that leads to the apprehension of the vandals.

Contact the Accomack County Sheriff's Department for more information.

Grafitti was scrawled across the side and the back of the old Jenkins Bridge Post Office. This "artwork" and the word NARC on the side was done sometime around June 30.  I am so happy to report that the old building has been removed and is now on the property of Grayson Chesser.

NARC was painted on a trailer of a local farmer.....The trailer and the land is still in use- EVERYDAY on Horsey Road.

Photos above from the Neal Parker Road in the Hallwood area.

Please contact the Accomack County Sheriff's Office if you have any information.

TIME MACHINE Preview ... Accomac County's 1906 Sensation!

It was called the Red Devil. It was the first time a resident of Onancock "indulged in the luxury of owning an auto." But the sensation it created was not all favorable. Not everyone approved. Some were apprehensive. "... the trade of the village merchants fell off, because the country people were afraid to venture into town."

Much more about it in the full Washington Post article from 1906..this Sunday on The Pocomoke Public Eye!

Do you have a local memory to share with PPE readers.. such as a big snow storm, a favorite school teacher, a local happening, something of interest your parents or grandparents told you about? It can be just a line or two or more if you wish. Your name won't be used unless you ask that it be. Send to tkforppe@yahoo.com and watch for it on a future TIME MACHINE posting!

Funeral Services For FF/EMT-E David R. Chew, Jr.

From North Hampton County Emergency Services Website
It is with deepest regret the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company and the Northampton County Department of EMS announces the line of duty death of FF/ EMT-E David Raymond Chew Jr. on July 16th, 2012.

A funeral service will be held at the Metompkin Elementary School in Parksley at 1300 Friday July 20th.

Burial with full fire fighter honors will follow in the Parksley Cemetery.

Following the service, a reception will be held at the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Station.

Companies attending with apparatus are requested to contact Fred Matthews at 757-710-9533.

In loving Memory of David:

FF/EMT-E Raymond R. Chew, Jr.
Chew had been an EMT-Enhanced provider with Northampton County since June 2010. He had previously been employed by Northampton from May 2005 to June 2006. Chew made the decision to return to NCEMS saying that he realized he had a love for working in EMS and that it was here that he was most happy. "David said that the biggest part of EMS for him was the people he worked with. The concern for patients and the care shown by the providers here, gave him a sense of pride and belonging that made him feel like part of a bigger family."

That sense of family extended to the volunteer communities within Northampton County as well. According to B. Cole Bonniwell, Rescue Captain for Community Volunteer Fire and Rescue in Exmore, "David Chew was more than just an EMS provider, he was a dedicated public servant. David did more than his pay required, but that was him. You can’t teach that kind of dedication or quality, you just hope for more people like David…a true leader."

Acting Rescue Captain, Keith Brady, of Cape Charles Rescue Service where Chew was primarily stationed, mirrored this sentiment saying that, "David was a great guy. He had such a positive attitude. He was never negative about anything. His attitude and his deep faith helped to keep everyone around him positive. We are going to miss him. You just can’t replace a man like that."

Members of NCEMS, CVFC, and CCRS will be participating in the funeral services for Chew this Friday. Staff from NCEMS will be marching with members of the Bloxom VFD in the procession.

Working with David Chew was a humbling experience. "He was a well-respected member of the NCEMS family and his loss will be deeply felt by patients and co-workers alike. David was a true friend to all and he will remain in our hearts, memories, and souls for a long, long time."

Two Suspects in June Counterfeit Case Charged

On June 17, 2012, at approximately 1 a.m., Ocean City Police were in the area of 17th Street and Philadelphia Avenue when an employee of a nearby business told officers that someone had just attempted to pass a $20 counterfeit bill.  Officers, who met with the employees and reviewed surveillance images of the incident, identified the suspect as Christopher Dale Miller, 28, of Berlin.

Christopher Dale Miller
Ocean City Police received numerous calls from businesses over the course of the investigation regarding counterfeit currency being passed. Investigators, who identified Miller from the initial incident, linked him to the additional cases involving counterfeit currency.

In addition, detectives identified a second suspect involved as Kevin Michael McCarthy Jr., 27, of Ocean City.  In all, approximately 31 counterfeit $20 bills were recovered and eight businesses were victimized.

Kevin Michael McCarthy,Jr.
Miller and McCarthy were charged with multiple counts of issuing and manufacturing counterfeit currency and theft.  Miller was arrested and charged through a warrant on June 20, 2012.  He was seen for an initial appearance by a District Court Commissioner for and then transferred to Worcester County Jail on a $25,000 bond.  McCarthy was charged on a warrant on July 16, 2012 and has not yet been apprehended by police.

NEW Traffic Signs On Cedar Street!!

In case you haven't noticed:   Look for new signs on Cedar Street.

Photo/Esther L. Troast
It has taken her a while. And it has taken lots of complaining, calling the police station and discussing the situation with two councilpeople, you name it, but Esther Troast has gotten the stop signs she has begged for. If you know Esther at all then you know how she is when she becomes passionate and concerned about something. She never gives up.

Esther found a sympathetic ear in Mayor Morrison so when she heard that the Pocomoke City Mayor and Council were going to discuss cameras and signs on Cedar Street she attended the meeting to give them her one last plea. The motion was in favor! Needless to say Esther was on cloud nine! And after being almost hit by an oncoming car while turning into her own driveway, relieved that something would be done.

Photo/Esther L. Troast
I don't know why a matter like this wasn't looked into right away. Doesn't matter now. The signs are there so maybe those that think they can travel at a high rate of speed up and down Cedar Street will either slow those cars down or get a nice healthy ticket.

And maybe, just maybe traffic will be slowed when school resumes in September so that students can walk safely to and from school.

And FYI: Don't send any nasty comments please about your feelings towards the Pocomoke City Council or question the amount of time it took to get this issue resolved. I've been trying to tell many of you that if you want to be heard you need to attend your city council meetings.

It isn't an issue......slowing your speed IS.

Thank you Esther!

DNR NEWS NOW: Md. Wildlife Crew Members Save Woman's Life

So many times our fire and EMS personnel are called to serve us and go unrecognized for what they do.  This article  has been forwarded to me so that all of you can see who from Pocomoke  EMS is  responsible for helping to save a womans life.

DNR NEWS NOW:
MARYLAND WILDFIRE CREW MEMBERS SAVE WOMAN'S LIFE
WHILE ON ASSIGNMENT

Maryland Wildfire Crew Members Save a Woman's Life While on Assignment
Strasburg, Va. (July 17, 2012) -
Members from a 20-person Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildland firefighting crew saved the life of an unresponsive motorist on July 3 while on a 14-day assignment in the George

“The heroic actions of this group in rendering emergency medical assistance aid and fighting this wildland fire are highly commendable,” said Steven W. Koehn, DNR Forestry Unit Director.

While the team was returning back to their base camp following a full day of firefighting, they came across a non-responsive woman lying on the road near the smoking car. The crew’s paramedics and emergency medical technicians administered medication to restore her breathing while other members extinguished the vehicle fire, provided traffic control and scene security. The woman was later transported by ambulance to the local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Fire supervisors hailed the crew members as heroes at the firefighting briefing the following morning.

“According to the information we received from the local hospital emergency room following the incident, the woman would not have lived without the emergency medical assistance the crew provided,” said Mark Beals, DNR Forest Service Crew Boss.

The men that rendered the emergency medical care are listed below:
  • Eric F. Peterson, Paramedic, Anne Arundel Co. Fire Dept.; from Lusby, Calvert Co.
  • Stephen E. Stanton, Paramedic, Anne Arundel Co. Fire Dept.; from Deale, Anne Arundel Co.
  • Sergio O. Castillo, EMT-B, Capt. Girdle Tree VFC; Pocomoke City EMS, Snow Hill, Worchester Co.
  • Mark M. Miller, EMT-B, Ass’t Chief, West Friendship VFD; from Sykesville, Carroll Co.
  • Keith E. Golden, EMT-B, Lieutenant, Kensington VFD; from Glenmont, Montgomery Co.

Following the roadside emergency incident, the men continued to fight wildfires in the steep and rugged landscape of George Washington and Jefferson National Forests for 10 additional days in oppressive heat.

DNR Forest Service, under agreement with the U.S. Forest Service, has provided specially trained wildland firefighting personnel and equipment to assist with wildfires throughout the United States since 1974. DNR Forest Service staff has been busy this summer supporting the Nation’s wildland firefighting efforts, sending crews to Colorado, Virginia and Missouri.

Maryland offers online driver's license renewals

GLEN BURNIE, Md. -
Maryland residents in their 20s or 30s may now be eligible to renew driver's licenses online or at self-service kiosks.

The Motor Vehicle Administration said Monday it is implementing the first of two phases for a new process to streamline driver's license renewals. The new service uses the most recent photograph of the driver and will require an office visit on the next renewal to update the image.

The first phase is for drivers aged 21 to 39 because drivers under 40 are exempt from the state's vision screening requirement. The second phase will accommodate the vision test for driver's license holders who are 40 or older. It will be implemented later.

Renewal licenses are initially valid for five years. They will eventually be lengthened for up to eight years.

Kenny Birch Gets 5 Years On Plea Agreement

2010 Surveillance photo

By Connie Morrison
He started off facing a maximum penalty of life in prison, but thanks to a plea agreement in Accomack County Circuit Court, Kenneth Corneal Birch Jr. received 10 years in the state penitentiary, with 5 years suspended, for the August 2010 robbery of the Corner Mart in Oak Hall.

According to testimony, Mr. Birch entered the store brandishing a knife and demanding money. After leaving with the contents of the till, the victim provided a description of the responsible party, along with a photo taken from video surveillance. Police asked the public for assistance in identifying the perpetrator based on his clothing, and those efforts produced Mr. Birch as a suspect. Further investigation showed a pickup Mr. Birch possessed matched the description provided by the victim.

When confronted with the evidence, Mr. Birch reportedly said that if Gary Agar would work a deal with him, he would be willing to talk about the robbery. In the end, that is what happened: he pled guilty and received a 10-year sentence, with 5 years suspended.

Riverside Grill Review

I have been lumbering around waiting to hear or read what everyone thinks about the new restaurant the Riverside Grill before I gave my review or pass judgement about the restaurant.

I'm not getting any local feedback so hopefully this article will bring about those that have had the opportunity to eat there and are willing to review The Riverside Grill be it positive or the critics in the comment section.

The restaurant opened last Monday and by the looks of the parking lot(s) it has been quite busy especially during dinner hours.

I personally visited the restaurant the second day that they opened (Tuesday) for dinner. Let me start by stating that the restaurant looks magnificent, both outside and inside but sadly that's where anything positive about it stops for me.

As I stated I went in for "dinner", well, much to my surprise, and disappointment there are no dinner platters available, they have appetizers and sides, but for meals they serve sandwiches only. The menu in my opinion made me feel like I was ordering food in a hospital because they give you a short (lottery type) pencil and for a menu you get a long narrow paper that itemizes all the different foods, sandwiches and condiments, each item had a check box to the right side of it that is used check-off what item(s) you want to order and you check it off with the short pencil.

When I entered the restaurant my wife and I were seated in the bar area, I have no problem with having been seated there but let me just say this, the way that the building is designed with the hardwood floor and lighthouse style open ceiling the acoustics are terrible. There happened to be several people at the bar in which one was a fairly boisterous woman and that section of the building actually amplified her screeching to a very annoying level. I then went to the (tiny) restroom and while gone the wife ordered us each a soda, when I returned to the table to order I find out that there was no menu other than the check-list, no dinner food or platters I was just ready to leave. When the waiter came by to take our check-list order I told him that I was looking for a dinner/meal and I did not want a sandwich and that I was sorry and to please put our drinks in to-go cups and let me have the check for the sodas, I paid the $4.22 ($5.00) for the two sodas and the wife and I left.

We did not leave mad by any means, we were however disappointed. This disappointment was probably my own fault because I had a vision in my mind that the restaurant would be a steak/seafood restaurant maybe like The Upper Deck, Suicide Bridge etc. and not a sandwich shop/bar.

As much as I want to give this place a 100% positive review I have to be honest and I can only give the details of my own personal experience.

No Injuries In Eastern Shore Tornado

No one was injured when a tornado touched down in Accomack County on Saturday afternoon.

The twister was sighted near Custis Neck Road and Drummondtown Road on the Eastern Shore, east of Onley, according to a National Weather Service news release.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, said the tornado touched down in Locustville at 1:02 p.m.
Anaya said no injuries were reported.

Lyle Alexander, a meteorologist with the service, said the tornado's path was about half a mile long. He said trees were uprooted and fell on some homes, damaged buildings and fell onto a car.

"It was not a strong tornado," he said. "It was a relatively weak tornado."

Rescue services were dispatched to the scene.

TIME MACHINE ... Pocomoke's "Birdseye."

(Reader-friendly viewing of newspaper archives material)

December, 1956.

(The Salisbury Times)

Pocomoke City holds ties to products that are known all over the world. Birdseye, division of General Foods Corporation, makes its productive facilities known wherever food is eaten.

When you see the product names Maxwell House Coffee, Baker's Chocolate, Baker's Cocoanut, Swans Down, Jello, Post's Cereals, Kool-Aid, Gaines Dog Food, Calumet, you can relate them to Birdseye products coming out of Pocomoke City, Maryland. These products are ready-to-cook frozen chicken, frozen beef, chicken and turkey pies, and frozen fruit pies. Such is the product background of a company founded in Pocomoke City as recently as 1942.

While the United States gets most of the 200,000 to 250,000 broilers processed and frozen each week at Birdseye in Pocomoke City, many of them are shipped to markets throughout the world. Shore broiler growers can well be proud of the hearty acceptance of their birds in this worldwide market. This helps partly to explain the reason Birdseye Frozen Chicken is so popular with the modern and efficient homemaker.

In addition, many of the 300,000 chicken pies shipped from the plant each week contain chicken raised by Delmarva growers.

Among the 650 co-workers, there are 75 of them who have been with Birdseye for ten to fifteen years of happy service. Many others working with Birdseye have also given long years of service.

In this modern plant, designed to create ideal working conditions, (this) top quality can be assured. Poultry Division Manager T.H. Ramsay, a Nebraskan transplanted to the Eastern Shore, numbers among his duties the responsibility for the maintenance of the quality of the products processed by Birdseye in Pocomoke City.

Charles G. Mortimer, president of General Foods, and Frederick G. Otterbien, Birdseye General Mgr., assigned Robert E. Breedlove, age 36, to Pocomoke City as Manager of Local Operations, and John T. Smullen, age 31, as his Assistant. This youth accent on management helps explain the outstanding record this company has made. Behind the forward thinking of management, and its energetic work, stand such successful benefits as a retirement plan, group life and hospital insurance, paid vacations, paid sick leaves, plus a stock purchase plan through which added benefits accrue for immediate dividends and retirement payments.

This management thoughtfulness is fully reciprocated: The co-workers give unstintedly of their abilities, time, and energy. This is the kind of effort that made America an industrial giant.

(Excerpts of ad text on Eastern Shore industry, sponsored by a Salisbury electrical supply firm.)

Footnote: With an increasing popularity of TV Dinners the demand for frozen chicken declined and Birdseye closed it's Pocomoke City plant in 1965. The local plant was purchased by Campbell Soup, providing employment initially for about 300. A worldwide restructuring program by Campbell brought a close to its' Pocomoke City operation in 1990.

Warm Water Is Unused By Town

POCOMOKE CITY, Md., Dec.2. (AP)- An underground stream of water- 85 degrees winter and summer- has been flowing under the business district here for 25 years. And nothing has been done to utilize it.

The spring was discovered several hundred feet underground when a test well was drilled. At that time the city was thinking of using artesian water for its city supply. The warm water kept on flowing and was diverted through a 3-inch pipe to the Pocomoke River.

Residents attempted to form a company to operate the "Pocomoke baths," but nothing came of the venture because of lack of capital. The water contains chloride of sodium, sulphur and magnesium compounds, engineers said.

BLESSINGS IN DISGUISE

From The LaPlata Crescent

A spark from a cigar dropped in a stable in Berlin, Worcester County, last Sunday evening, reduced to ashes the business portion of the town and destroyed over $250,000 worth of property. Though the losers by the fire may not be able to look at it in that light, the conflagration, so far as the town is concerned, may not be an unmixed evil. Many of the now flourishing towns on the "Shore" date their present era of prosperity from some more or less disastrous fire. Salisbury, Snow Hill, and Pocomoke City have in recent years all sprang Phoenix-like from their own ashes, and the new town has in each case far out classed the old. There is no reason to suppose that Berlin cannot or will not do likewise.

(Cumberland Evening Times- Cumberland, Md.)

Pocomoke City- A potato growing record is claimed by Ray Redden, farmer living near here, after he took 146.6 barrels of prime white potatoes from each acre of one plot. The crop included only five barrels of culls. Seventy to eighty barrels is considered average, a hundred-barrel yield unusual.

A & N Electric Co-op Warns Members

Beware of Scammers!

A & N Electric Cooperative is warning members to be aware of a bill-paying scam that asks them to disclose Social Security and bank routing numbers.

Scammers claim electric consumers can have their utility bills paid under an Obama Administration program. No such program exists.

The solicitations have been made door-to-door, online and by phone. Members are asked for personal information and then given fake bank account numbers to use for making a payment on their utility bill. Due to this scam, A & N has currently suspended the use of E-checks on their website. All other features of the website are working as usual. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Members are urged to alert police if they're contacted about the scam.

A CUBAN BOY'S STORY....

When I was about 9 years old I remember asking my dad about Castro. I asked, "Is Castro a good guy or bad?"
Dad said he couldn't tell!! This was about 1955. We were living in Louisiana at the time. Dad was in the Army and stationed there.

Cuba was fairly close and in the news a lot. The Cubans were asking the same question! Ike was president.

This past July 4th, we had the pleasure of sharing a summer barbecue with a refugee from Cuba. Our dinner conversation was starkly different than most.

This refugee came to the United States as a young boy in the early 1960's. His family was more fortunate than most, as they were able to bring a suitcase and $100 when they fled Castro's newly formed revolutionary paradise.

Our dinner consisted of all-American fare: hamburgers, potato salad, fresh ears of sweet corn and watermelon. This is a menu shared with family and friends nationwide...while celebrating the birth of our beloved America...on the Fourth of July.

We began with a simple discussion about our country, and the direction it has taken since Barack Obama came to power. We shared the usual complaints about the sour economy and liberal social engineering emanating from the rulers in Washington.

But then he said it. The sentence flowed naturally from our refugee guest. I assume it was unplanned. But it carried the weight of a freight train.

"You know when Castro took power, none of us knew he was a Communist".

We sat stunned. He continued, "Yes, we all thought he was a patriot, a nationalist. Before the revolution he didn't sound like a radical."

The comparison at this point was easy, and I interjected, "You mean just like Barack Obama?"

He responded; "Yes, just like Barack Obama." He continued, "We were all shocked as the government just continued to grab more power. First they said the revolution is over, so please turn in your guns. We all complied."

I also remember my uncle saying; “Castro will only nationalize some of the big industries. He will never come and take our family hardware store!!” But that is exactly what happened. Castro started with the sugar mills and the large industries, but they eventually came and knocked on the door of our family hardware store. My family had run this store for generations. They said we now own the hardware store, you work for us. And that four-bedroom home you own...it is now our property too. You have to move yourself and the five children into those two rooms of the house, because others are moving in here with you."

The lesson learned from this discussion, is a lesson most Americans refuse to hear. Political leaders can lie about their agenda and once in office, they can take totally unexpected turns.

If you had asked us three years ago if we thought General Motors or Chrysler would be nationalized, we would have never believed it. We could never contemplate a country where the rule of law, the most fundamental building block of a justice society...would be evaporating, just like it did in Castro's Cuba in the early 1960's.

But the news of injustice keeps increasing;

Black Panthers are not charged with wrong doing by the U.S. Department of Justice...because their crimes are against whites;

The bond holders of GM are stripped of their assets...without being given due process by the government;

Car Dealerships are closed with out due process;

Governmental leaders are bribed in full daylight...only to have all investigation of the crimes stifled...by the Attorney General;

The U.S. borders are over run with crime and illegal activity, and the leaders in D.C. act as if it is important to protect the lawbreakers...while the innocent are killed and over run;

When local communities attempt to enforce the law, they are ridiculed...and threatened as racists and bigots. They are sued by the very administration entrusted with enforcing the law.

Without the rule of law, the U.S. Constitution is a sham!! Without the rule of law, our beloved America is swiftly becoming a country where only the well connected and politically powerful will be safe. As an author recently and so eloquently explained in her most recent book..."a culture of corruption has replaced honest government" (Michelle Malkin).

The only way this problem will be fixed, is by massive citizen action. All honest citizens that want to be treated equally, must come together...and demand that the favoritism, the bribes, the uneven enforcement of law...end now!! And yes, it can happen if we all pull together.

TAILGATE AUCTION 7/28/12

_*Congressional Reform Act of 2013*_

1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into

the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/31/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.

Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!
